Approximately 15 families turned out at Lucy Elementary School in Millington, Tennessee on Saturday, Aug. 25, for a back-to-school picnic hosted by Temple United Methodist Church (UMC), also located in Millington.
Lucy Elementary is the church’s “precious adopted school,” according to Temple UMC’s pastor, Rev. D’Leigh Harvell.
Eight volunteers from the church were present to serve hotdogs, chips, and lemonade, as well as play BINGO with school supplies as prizes.
“It was amazing how many complete families came out: moms, dads, a grandmother or two, students and siblings. It was a family affair,” said Harvell.
This is the third year Temple UMC has hosted the picnic.
“Each year has been more successful that the last, with this one being the best,” reported Harvell. Every family “sat and ate and then stayed and stayed.”
She said church members were “able to engage in rich conversation and get to know” the families, learning their names and hearing their stories.
“We laughed together. We cried together. It was a rich, rich time.
“In my mind and within my heart, I am convicted that this is exactly what our denomination means when we declare that our purpose, as a people of faith, is to offer Christ to a hurting world one neighborhood at a time,” said Harvell.
