Proceeds from sale of new book benefit United Methodist Neighborhood Centers of Memphis

United Methodist Neighborhood Centers of Memphis has been named the recipient of proceeds from sales of a new book by Dr. Mark Matheny, retired Memphis Conference United Methodist clergy.

Surprising Angels: Dorpey and Other Friends was published this summer under Matheny’s pen name, Obed Branch.

The book is a collection of “15 character sketches of unusual people” who touched Matheny’s life during the early years of his ministry -- in the 1970s and 1980s.

Most of these persons, Matheny explained, “were on the margins of society” and “fulfilled the Scripture from Hebrews about (how) our lives are blessed by ‘angels unawares.’”

There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter that Matheny said may be used by Sunday School classes and prayer groups.

The book sells for $12 per single copy or $10 per copy for an order of five or more.

To order, email Rev. Emily Matheny at, email Ann al-Chokhachi at or call Dr. Mark Matheny at 901-428-4633.
