Materials are now available for the 2020 Lenten Hunger Offering campaign that will run from Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, to Easter Sunday, April 12.

Established in 1983, the offering once known as the Lenten World Hunger Offering was shortened to Lenten Hunger Offering (LHO) in 2016 to help stress local hunger needs alongside world hunger issues.

2020 marks the campaign’s 37th anniversary. Over the years the Memphis Conference of The United Methodist Church has raised more than $2 million for hunger relief.

RECOGNIZING THE NEED

As the Memphis Conference’s world hunger advocate, Dr. Gary Morse is leading the Lenten Hunger Offering campaign. He is pastor of Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tennessee.

He writes in his campaign letter: “Hunger know no boundaries and can affect people from all walks of life. Food insecurity is one paycheck or one illness away for many.”

Morse has chosen Isaiah 58;10 as the 2020 campaign scripture: “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.”

MEETING THE NEED

Through this campaign in 2019, Memphis Conference churches gave more than $38,000 that was distributed to feeding ministries inside and outside the Memphis Conference of The United Methodist Church.
