Campground UMC in Drummonds, TN, uses 'One Matters' award money for community picnic
Campground United Methodist Church (UMC) in Drummonds, Tennessee, sought to attract new church members with a community picnic funded with a portion of the "One Matters Discipleship Award" money it received in June.
During the 2017 Memphis Annual Conference, four churches received the One Matters award, which recognizes churches that grew from zero professions of faith and baptisms to positive numbers. The award also carries a $1,000 gift.
Pastor David Horne reported that his church used $830 to provide food and entertainment for a free community picnic, held Saturday, July 15.
“We had inflatables with a bounce house and water slide,” he said. “We also had a face painter to add to the fun of it all. We cooked some 160 pounds of smoked chicken, along with potato salad, barbecue beans and coleslaw.”
Horne said he hoped the smell of hickory smoke would tantalize newcomers to the picnic. He said church members made themselves identifiable to visitors by wearing yellow shirts bearing the Methodist cross and flame logo. Several members stood at key entry points to greet guests.
Horne said church members wished to be good stewards of the One Matters gift and only advertised the event using Facebook, flyers and the church marquee. He said members even stood by the road with signs inviting passing drivers.
Horne said he feels the event successfully allowed them to meet new neighbors in the community.
“My hope and prayer is that seeds were planted and that God will yield the harvest,” he said. “With God's help, we will continue to minister beyond the walls of our church, by reaching one person and one neighborhood at a time.”
The other three Memphis Conference churches to receive the One Matters award were Atwood UMC in Atwood, Tennessee; New Life UMC in Ripley, Tennessee; and Russell Chapel UMC in Murray, Kentucky. Click here to read more about the four church winners.
