$50,000 is goal for Memphis Conference's 2017 'Lenten Hunger Offering' that runs March 1- April 16

$50,000 is the fundraising goal for the Memphis Conference’s annual hunger offering that will run in 2017 from Ash Wednesday, March 1, to Easter Sunday, April 16.
Established in 1983, the offering once known as the Lenten World Hunger Offering was shortened to Lenten Hunger Offering (LHO) in 2016 to help stress local hunger needs alongside world hunger issues.

Dr. Debra S. (Debi) Selby is leading the campaign for the Memphis Conference in the new quadrennium (2016-2020) as the conference’s new world hunger advocate. She lives in Paris, Tennessee, where she is a member of Paris First United Methodist Church and works as a pediatrician.

Selby is challenging all churches that have never participated in the LHO campaign in the past to participate this year and asking those churches that have generously participated in the past to increase their giving by at least ten percent in 2017.

That two-part challenge is how Selby hopes to increase total giving from nearly $34,000 in 2016 to $50,000 in 2017. Click here to read her 2017 campaign letter.

As was done in 2016, the 2017 campaign is designed to keep more money inside the Memphis Conference. More money will be granted to the conference’s four districts (than prior to 2016) for their churches’ community and neighborhood food pantries and feeding ministries.

Other 2017 campaign beneficiaries (Memphis Conference and global partners) include Reelfoot Rural Ministries, United Methodist Neighborhood Centers of Memphis, Our Father's House, Project Peanut Butter and feeding ministry partners in Mexico. To increase the number of Memphis Conference churches that support the LHO in 2017, as well as work more intentionally to "open our eyes about who is hungry in our communities," Dr. Selby asked each church in the Memphis Conference to submit the name of at least one person in their church (clergy or laity), to help implement and drive the campaign at the local church level in 2017.

Those names were due to Selby by Jan. 3. Each of them will receive a special communication about the 2017 campaign.

A variety of print and electronic materials have been developed to help churches (with the help of their local campaigner organizer and/or pastor) implement a 2017 local campaign. Click here to access those materials that include a poster, a video and much more.

To ensure prompt distribution of funds to those in need, please remit offerings as soon as possible.  All offerings should be received by the Treasurers office no later than Friday, May 19. They should be mailed to Memphis Conference Treasurer, PO Box 10667, Jackson, TN 38308-0111. (Use Second Mile Giving on the monthly remittance statement. Please note Lenten Hunger Offering.)

Any individual or church with questions about the LHO should contact their district office or Memphis Conference Communications at communications@memphis-umc.org or 731-664-8480.
