Lake Junaluska undergoing renovations

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. – Two lodging facilities at Lake Junaluska, Sunnyside Lodge and Mountain View Lodge, are undergoing major renovations this fall.

Built in the late 1950s, both facilities have only been open seasonally because they did not have heating or air conditioning. Renovations to both facilities began October 1.

Sunnyside Lodge and Mountain View Lodge are both undergoing major improvements. New heating and cooling units, as well as new circuits for hair dryers and other utilities are being added to each room in both facilities. In addition, rooms will be renovated to include new insulated windows, new carpet, and paint.

These exciting renovations would not be possible without the time and efforts of a group of volunteers known as the NOMADS.

NOMADS, or “Nomads on a Mission Active in Divine Service,” have been a mission outreach ministry of the United Methodist Church since 1988.

NOMADS travel the country in recreational vehicles to help non-profit church-related groups with their needs. Several groups of NOMADS will be assisting Lake Junaluska with these renovations.

“We truly appreciate the efforts of each group of NOMADS,” said Jimmy L. Carr, Executive Director of Lake Junaluska. “Because of their commitment, we have been able to move forward with renovations at an incredible pace. At Lake Junaluska, we are committed to providing our guests with quality experiences, and these renovations will further our ability to do just that.”

The first group of NOMADS began work at Lake Junaluska on October 5, and continued until October 22. Another group of volunteer NOMADS will come November 2, and they will continue renovations for three weeks. More volunteers will continue to help with renovations throughout the winter.

“I have begun to call them the ‘Yes’mads because they will do anything that is asked of them with a smile on their faces,” said Don Ebaugh, Director of Maintenance at Lake Junaluska. “When we started renovations, the completion date was May 1, 2010, but if all falls into place, we may rent the facilities beginning in January, 2010.”

Last year, Sunnyside and Mountain View Lodges underwent exterior upgrades. With new windows and carpet as well as heating and air-conditioning, by the time renovations to both lodging facilities are complete, Lake Junaluska hopes Sunnyside and Mountain View can be available yearlong.
