UMVIM Team forming to go to Nicaragua, January 22-30

A Memphis Conference United Methodist Volunteers in Mission team will be serving in Nicaragua January 22 - 30, 2010.
The team will be working through El Ayudante (www.nica missions.com) and will be staying in Leon in El Ayudante’s team houses. The approximate cost per person is $1525.
The team will be involved in several different ministries including working with the children in El Ayudante’s orphanage and children in several churches and schools conducting VBS and puppet ministry, feeding hundreds of Nicaraguans, medical ministry, and construction. Team members will be involved in the ministry areas to which they feel called.
Building and maintaining ongoing relationships and partnering with the Nicaraguans in ministry are primary foci.

Christmas and Culture Day at Lakeshore, Dec. 5

December 5, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lakeshore will be a day to celebrate the season like they do somewhere else. England, for instance!
Has the idea of Christmas got you stressed out already? We want you to come to Lakeshore and spend the day with us celebrating Christmas the way they do in England.
For a day, we will transform Lakeshore into a different place and take part in some of their traditions. We’ll experience authentic food, decorations, crafts and activities. This will be a great way to get into the Christmas spirit, a wonderful family outing, and maybe even educational.
Why not spend some time in jolly old England this Christmas? We’ll carol for figgy pudding and break fairly frequently for tea. You’ll experience where many of our favorite carols come from, and we’ll tell you about Boxing Day and mistletoe.
This year’s event will be set up in come and go as you please style. We will serve lunch with traditional English food, and we’ll serve dessert towards the end of the day (with tea, of course).
(If you have experience with English culture, cooking, and traditions, we would love your help.) Contact troy@lakeshoreuma.com.

Good Shepherd offers free archery classes

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Memphis has begun free archery classes for children, youth, and adults of the church and the community.   There has been a wonderful response with as many as 30 people attending.
John and Karen Gunterman, members of the church and certified teachers of archery, provided one night of archery for recreation at Vacation Bible School. It was so well received the church decided to offer lessons one night a week. In time Good Shepherd hopes to develop the ArrowFaith Ministries. The ministry provides a student guide that combines the character traits that archery develops with some of the traits that Christians want to develop.
