Lambuth donors pledge $4 million in matching funds

Four million dollars isn’t small potatoes in anyone’s budget. Four million dollars, a sum pledged by two of Lambuth University’s most generous supporters, would go a long way toward spiffing up the Lambuth University campus, making faculty and staff salaries more competitive and providing scholarships for aspiring students.

But there’s both a catch and an opportunity. The opportunity? The donors are pledging up to $4 million in matching dollars for unrestricted gifts to the university. That means Lambuth could realize as much as $8 million during the campaign. The catch? All gifts must be made before June 30, 2008.

Campaign kicked off May 17

On Saturday, May 17, Lambuth University kicked off its Jackson area fundraising campaign. A team of about 50 volunteers comprised of Lambuth alumni and friends met on campus to enjoy a picnic and discuss plans. During the evening, the volunteers were told about the two Lambuth supporters who have pledged to match, dollar for dollar, up to $4 million, every unrestricted gift made to the University before June 30. “This is the first time in Lambuth’s history a pledge of this magnitude has been made in conjunction with a campaign,” said Kendall McCarter, Vice President of Development and University Relations at Lambuth.

“Now every unrestricted dollar that is given to the university during this campaign will, in essence, be doubled.”

Funds raised during this campaign— which lasts through June 30—will count toward the longterm fundraising goal of the University’s Foundation for the Future campaign. Foundation for the Future is a long-range strategic plan approved by Lambuth’s Board of Trustees in June 2006 to provide improvements throughout the campus.

Campus improvements include renovating and refurbishing campus buildings, constructing new facilities, increasing faculty and staff compensation, increasing student scholarships and much more.

“The generosity of Jacksonians has always been remarkable, and we will look to them during this time to support Lambuth University, which has been a part of the fabric of this community and the United Methodist Church for more than 160 years,” said Dr. Fred Zuker, President of Lambuth University.

Foundation for the Future three year goal $20 million

The three-year campaign goal for the Foundation for the Future campaign is $20 million. The goal for the Jackson area campaign over this period is $3 million. The university has already raised more than $2 million toward the $3 million goal, and the goal for this phase of the campaign is to close that gap.

“I have been so inspired by the sense of family and community that is Lambuth,” said McCarter. “This campaign is one of the most significant and transformational efforts that the University has ever pursued. I am confident that the Jackson area will respond to this challenge to support Lambuth University and all that it represents for this community.”
