Over a month’s period from late April to late May, Covington First United Methodist Church (UMC) has distributed $2,000 in $25 gift cards to families in need via a ministry it calls the Mason Outreach.

Mason is a community located 14 miles east of Covington in Tipton County, Tennessee. It has no grocery store or gas station. Most residents travel to Covington for these needs, explained Jones.

Since April 27 when the gift card distribution began, “The Lord will provide” was heard from grateful recipients more than once, according to Sue Jones, a member of Covington FUMC and one of the Mason Outreach organizers.

Gift cards may be redeemed for food, gas and prescriptions, items people often need when household funds are low. Each family received two $25 cards.

Describing the recipients, Jones said many have been furloughed from their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though Covington FUMC has a food pantry ministry, Jones said many of the gift card recipients do not benefit from that.

As the cards were distributed, Jones said the “most touching” interactions were with disabled elderly persons who depend on neighbors and family for assistance.

The Mason Outreach is funded by donations from members of Covington First UMC.

Others who work with Jones in making Mason Outreach possible are Gail Ganier, Kathy Wallace and David Wiseman.
