Trenton First United Methodist Church (UMC) in Trenton, Tennessee, joined with other area churches to conduct "prayer walks" at schools in Trenton on July 29.

"Members of the community gathered at Rosenwald Middle School and Peabody High School to "cover the schools in prayer" before the start of the new school year on Aug. 1, reported Rev. Brian Griffith, pastor of Trenton First UMC.

The group (14 at the middle school and 12 at the high school) met simultaneously in the lobbies with school officials to pray for the children and new school year. Next they broke into smaller groups to visit all classrooms and teaching areas, also offering prayer.

They concluded their walks by praying for the principals, administration, staff and teachers.

Trenton Elementary School received prayer that night from area ministers during a pre-k/kindergarten open house, said Griffith.

It was a great event and a good start to build from for next year, commented CeCe Jones, Trenton alderman.

As the prayer walks were being considered, Griffith said all he had to do was "ask." He noted that everyone he spoke to in the school system was "very excited" about the prayer walks.

"I can't help but wonder," added Griffith, "what other opportunities we are missing simply because we haven't asked."
