Rev. Eric Soard awarded 'Emerging Ministries Grant'
Rev. Eric Soard
Rev. Eric Soard, a clergy member of the Memphis Conference serving in the Tanzania Conference in Africa, has been awarded an Emerging Ministries Grant for deacons from the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM), according to a recent announcement from Victoria Rebeck, director of Deacon Ministry Development with GBHEM.
The award provides encouragement to a ministry led by a United Methodist deacon to engage church members in ministry with neighbors who are poor, overlooked or otherwise marginalized.
Soard's grant will support his work for the empowerment of peace and justice in the community.
Soard plans to create a new ministry that will create trauma support groups for women in the community, as well as a girls' camp for girls in danger of going through female circumcision where they can experience an alternative coming-of-age experience.
The grant proposal review committee, reported Rebeck, was "impressed with the way the project reflects the ministry of the deacon through justice ministry, engages church members in ministry, creates opportuntiies for transformation and builds relationships between church members and those served."
