Job Description


Position Overview:

This position ensures that Emmanuel United Methodist Church’s financial records are updated, timely, and accurate.  The Bookkeeper works directly with church staff to communicate status of budgeted expenditures, budget requests and expenditure approvals according to church policy. The Bookkeeper works with confidential information and must respect privacy and confidences of church staff, church members and others working with a need to know about financial information.  Directly accountable to Church Business Administrator.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Verifies, prepares and makes weekly bank deposits
  • Provides payroll information to third party, New Hire
  • Files annual reports as required by law and conference requirements
  • Processes incoming invoices timely and accurately
  • Coordinates as needed with EUMK bookkeeper
  • Maintain giving records accurately with timely reporting to contributors about the status of pledges to the church and other giving
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports in a format that meets the requests of the Finance Committee and the church conference
  • Work closely with Church Treasurer, a volunteer position
  • Meet with the Finance Committee to report on financial activities, status and forecasts
  • Work with the Stewardship Committee to ensure timely campaigns for requesting next year pledges from the church members and those who attend
  • Maintain confidentiality of the information learned and used
  • Communicates regularly with staff on their budget status and provides ongoing reports
  • Work with counting team to count Sunday morning tithes and offerings
  • Post online contributions to donor’s giving statements
  • Occasional travel will be required to make bank deposits using personal transportation.
  • Accurately maintains the ShelbyNext software system recording payments, deposits and credits to the appropriate accounts
  • Maintain financial records – current and long term document storage
  • Respond to member requests timely and thoroughly



Core Competencies:

  • Experience with bookkeeping software

  • Possess ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Demonstrate ethical and spiritual behavior appropriate to a United Methodist Church
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate proficiently with staff, members and vendors
  • Proficiency with MS Office, including Excel and Word, and use of email
  • Knowledge of payroll reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and basic accounting rules
  • Ability to be a team player and flexible in fulfilling needs as requested

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week. The weekly schedule is to be determined with the Church Business Administrator and will be within normal business hours.  Attendance during evening hours is required for designated meetings such as Finance Committee.   

Required Education and Experience:

  • College education preferred
  • Accounting / Bookkeeping experience required
  • Prior experience with payroll required
  • Ability to pass a general background security investigation.
