With the start of the new school year, Drummonds Elementary School in Drummonds, Tennessee, was the recipient of backpacks and school supplies, thanks to Poplar Grove United Methodist Church in Drummonds.

“This small church is very mission-minded,” reported its pastor, Rev. Barry Henson (retired), who began serving the church this year.

The Tipton County church, founded 177 years ago, averages less than 50 in worship, according to Henson, and 70 percent of the school's students live at or below the poverty level.

In addition to serving its neighborhood school, Henson said the congregation also recently raised more than $1,250.00 for United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to help survivors of recent hurricanes.

Throughout the year, Henson said the church collects food for Tipton County's Munford United Methodist Church Food Pantry and participates in the “Box Tops for Education” program to benefit Drummonds Elementary School.

“The church may not be large in membership or attendance," said Henson, "but they have huge hearts for their neighbors."
