Capleville UMC in Memphis 'engages mission field' with career conference & book club for community

4/13/2017

Two events are coming up in the Capleview United Methodist Church (UMC) community in Memphis, Tennessee that "engage the mission field,” one of the four areas of focus of the Memphis Conference of The United Methodist Church.

"Together we can reach our neighbors with the resources we all need to prosper as saints and citizens," said the church's pastor, Rev. Autura Eason-Williams.

Job Training and Career Conference

Capleville UMC is hosting a Job Training and Career Conference on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, located at 4725 Riverdale Road.

FedEx, Durham Bus Services, staffing agencies and the military will be hiring. Southwest Tennessee Community College, Tennessee College of Applied Technology, and apprenticeship programs will provide job training opportunities.

The event is for youth, young adults and adults looking for employment, a better job or job training.

Saturday Book Club

Capleville UMC is part of the US Making it Happen Shalom Zone in Memphis that is sponsoring a Saturday Book Club that will meet on Saturdays in May and June, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the East Shelby Library, located one block from the church.

"The Book Club is for four- and five-year-olds and their parents/guardians," explained Eason-Williams. "Families will be encouraged to check out books from the library to read in between sessions of the book club and children will receive at least one free book each week. Children, adults and youth from the community will read to the families, plan, and implement activities to make reading fun.

"This is a pilot program and the objective is to foster a love for reading that translates to home and school, ultimately improving literacy and building up families in our community."

This book club will “engage the mission field” by encouraging families to read together so the story of (our) community is about children who read at or above grade level, added Eason-Williams.
