5/24/2012

A workshop designed for clergy starting new appointments as senior or lead pastors is planned for this summer.

"New Beginnings: Your crucial first year in a New Appointment" will take place Wednesday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center of Excellence in Faith and Health at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis.
Rev. Rick Kirchoff of the Clergy Coaching Network and Dr. Harry Durbin, Interim Senior Vice President for Faith and Health at Methodist Le Bonheur, will facilitate the workshop.
Additional leadership will be provided by Donna Tosches of the Methodist Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
There also will be a panel discussion from the perspectives of a District Superintendent, a lay person and a senior minister.
“Getting off to a good start in a new pastorate is crucial,” said Kirchoff.
“If you are moving to a new appointment this June,” he said, “(this workshop) is designed to help you take advantage of the special opportunities and avoid the pitfalls of leadership in the first 12 months of a pastorate.”
Among the things Kirchoff said attendees will learn are:
  • how to take care of yourself and find balance in the midst of the stress of transition
  • how to get clear about your role in your new appointment
  • how to assess the history, needs, strengths and challenges of a new congregation
  • what to avoid and what to do in the first 12 months
  • how to deal more effectively with conflict
  • how to put together a 12-month plan of ministry
The Center of Excellence in Faith and Health is located at 1265 Union Ave. in Memphis.
Cost for the workshop is $25, which includes lunch. Space is limited.
