Youth from three districts participate in lay speaker training

Teri Maddox, Jackson State Community College Professor of English and Speech, helped lead the youth training.


A group of 26 youth from the Brownsville, Dyersburg and McKendree Districts participated in a Basic Lay Speakers Training for Youth at Lakeshore Camp and Retreat Center in Eva, TN on April 13-14.

Having completed the training, the youth are now local church lay speakers and eligible to receive training to become certified lay speakers.
 
Leaders/presenters were Becca Alexander, Youth Minister at Martin First UMC; Sherry Daugherty, church youth leader; Susan Davidson, Brownsville District Lay Resource Leader; Teri Maddox,Professor of English and Speech at Jackson State Community College; and Denise Russell, Dyersburg District Lay Resource Leader.
 
Ryan Pattat and Logan Twiddy, youth certified lay speakers, also helped with the training.
 
Chaperones were Chris Alexander, Jacky Daugherty, Deb Lowrance, Vicky Kendrick, and Don and Mary McLeary.
 
Russell said the chaperones “did everything from helping prepare food and serving to driving to praying with and for the kids,” as well as “listening to them as God touched their lives.”
 
Rev. Dean Emerson served communion as part of the closing service.
